Accounting Officers, Controllers

General Electric has appointed Jamie Miller as chief accounting officer. Since August 2007, Miller has served as senior vice president, chief accounting officer, and controller of WellPoint. She replaces Walter Ielusic, who was serving as interim chief accounting officer.

Arch Coal has promoted John Lorson to be vice president and chief accounting officer. Lorson has served as controller of the $2.4 billion company since 1999.

Brooks Automation has announced the resignation of Richard Small as senior vice president, corporate controller, and chief accounting officer. Martin Headley, who is currently executive vice president and chief financial officer, will assume the role of interim chief accounting officer.

$1.6 billion Meredith Corp. has appointed Stephen Lacy as interim chief accounting officer, as well as interim vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Lacy is also president and chief executive officer of the company.

General Counsel, Corporate Secretaries

Online brokerage e-Trade Financial Corp. has announced the resignation of Arlen Gelbard as general counsel. His departure follows massive losses stemming from e-Trade’s sputtering mortgage business. His position will be filled on an interim basis by Russell Elmer, who served as general counsel for six years before leaving the company last year.

Assurant has appointed Bart Schwartz as executive vice president, chief legal officer, and secretary. Schwartz succeeds Jerome Atkinson, Assurant’s executive vice president and chief compliance officer, who will retire on July 1.

Pappert

Cephalon has hired Jerry Pappert as executive vice president and general counsel. Pappert joins the biotechnology company from the law firm Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, where he was partner. He replaces John Osborn, who resigned March 31 after more than 10 years with the company.

$1.4 billion IDEX Corp. said that Frank Notaro will resign as vice president, general counsel, and secretary for personal reasons. He will remain in his current role until a successor has been found.

Chief Risk, Compliance Officers

McMurray

Washington Mutual has named John McMurray as its new chief risk officer on the heels of the mortgage and credit crisis fallout. He assumes the role from Ron Cathcart. McMurray joined WaMu in August 2007 from the now-defunct Countrywide Financial, where he also served as chief risk officer.

Capital Investment Cos. has named Ronald King chief compliance officer. King comes to the financial services and brokerage firm with more than 13 years of management experience in the securities industry. He most recently served as managing partner of the King Garner Group of the Carolinas.

Columbus, Ohio-based Grange Mutual Casualty Co. has promoted Paul McCaffrey to the newly created role of chief risk officer. He will be responsible for the company’s enterprise risk management strategy and overseeing the company’s financial risk operations. Previously, McCaffrey was vice president of finance, a position he has held since November 2006.

On the Board

Lumigent Technologies has appointed John Capobianco as chairman of the board. Most recently, Capobianco was president and chief operating officer of MEDecision.

Capital One Financial Corp. has appointed Bradford Warner to its board of directors. Warner will join the board’s audit and risk and finance and trust oversight committees. He was the head of premier and small business banking for Bank of America until his retirement in 2004 after a nearly 30-year career with the bank.

NCR Corp., a maker of ATM machines and similar equipment, has elected Richard Clemmer and Robert DeRodes to its board of directors. Clemmer, who is currently a senior adviser to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., will serve on the audit committee. DeRodes, chief information officer for Home Depot since 2002, will serve on the compensation and human resources committees.

The board of directors of Jones Lang LaSalle has announced the loss of Sir Derek Higgs, who died suddenly in London on April 28. Sir Derek had served as a director since March 1999 and also served as chairman of the audit committee.

Huron Consulting has appointed Bruce Cox as vice president of business development and marketing based in the company’s Atlanta office. He joined the company as a managing director in July 2007, when Huron acquired the company he co-founded, Callaway Partners.
