Paredes

The Securities and Exchange Commission has sworn in Troy Paredes as commissioner. Prior to his appointment, Paredes was a law professor at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. With his admission, the SEC is now back at full complement for the first time since 2007.

Diethelm

$31 billion Swiss bank UBS has hired Markus Diethelm as its new general counsel. Diethelm will replace UBS’s interim legal chief Peter Kurer. Diethelm is the former chief legal officer at insurer Swiss Re. His appointment follows the departure of the bank’s North American general counsel, David Aufhauser, who resigned on the heels of a federal investigation and lawsuit for the Swiss bank’s role in the collapse of the auction rate securities market.

$8 billion Calpine Corp. has named Thaddeus Miller as executive vice president, chief legal officer, and secretary. Miller, who brings almost 30 years of legal experience to Calpine, most recently served as executive vice president and chief legal officer of Texas Genco until 2006.

Multimedia Games has appointed Uri Clinton as general counsel and corporate secretary. Clinton brings to Multimedia Games more than 10 years business and legal experience. For the last six years, he has served as vice president of legal affairs for Harrah’s Entertainment's Central Division.

Accounting Officers, Controllers

WellCare Health Plans has named William White chief accounting officer. White has been the vice president of finance at WellCare since February. Previously, he was WellCare’s corporate controller.

DiamondRock Hospitality has promoted Briony Quinn corporate controller, effective Sept. 1. Quinn, currently assistant controller, will assume the role from Sean Mahoney, who was promoted to chief financial officer, treasurer, and executive vice president.

Chief Risk, Compliance Officers

$6 billion Bermuda-based MF Global Ltd. has named Tracy Lowery Whille as chief compliance officer. Whille previously served as senior managing director and global compliance director at Bear Stearns Cos.

$1 billion W Holding Co., the bank holding company of Westernbank Puerto Rico, has hired Mayra Hansen as senior vice president and chief risk officer. She is the former director of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s Puerto Rico Office.

On the Board

Biondi

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo! has elected Frank Biondi and John Chapple to its board of directors. Biondi, former CEO of Viacom, is currently senior managing director of private equity fund WaterView Advisors. Chapple, former CEO of Nextel Partners, currently is president of private equity firm Hawkeye Investments. The appointments are part of a deal that the struggling Internet company forged to avoid facing a proxy fight by billionaire investor Carl Icahn.

$19 billion electric utilities company Exelon has elected John Canning to its board of directors. He has not yet been appointed to any committees. Canning is chairman and co-founder of Madison Dearborn Partners Corp. and chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

The board of directors of Constellation Energy has announced the loss of Edward Crooke, who passed away on Aug 10. Crooke had served as a director since April 1999 and also served as a member of the executive committee, audit committee, and the committee on nuclear power.

Charles Hughes has been named to serve on the Lithia Motors board of directors. He also will serve on the corporate governance, compensation, and audit committees. Hughes is former president and CEO of Mazda North America Operations.

Reed Smith, one of the 15 largest law firms in the world, has hired Amy Greer as a partner in the Philadelphia office of its regulatory litigation group. Greer joins Reed Smith from the Enforcement Division of the SEC.

Graf Repetti & Co., a public accounting and business consulting firm, has hired Anthony Cox as an information technology auditor of the firm. Prior to joining the firm, Cox has spent the past four years with BDO Consulting, a division of BDO Seidman.
