U.K. whistleblower protections, awards needed to compensate ‘career suicide’

Whistleblower

Discrimination against whistleblowers in the U.K. has risen to such a level that the government may need to actively pursue plans to afford greater legal protection, as well as introduce financial awards to compensate for their “career suicide.”

Last month, the Financial Times reported the rise in the number of cases of workers making legal claims against employers for unfair treatment after raising concerns in the workplace.

It found that the annual number of claims against employers involving “public interest disclosures”–a term which should generate whistleblower protection under U.K. law–increased by 92 percent between 2015 and 2023.
