Survey: Organizations broadly adopting AI, with varied governance

The vast majority of businesses are using artificial intelligence tools and most are doing so without any AI governance–a glaring compliance gap that poses extreme risks, according to a new survey by Compliance Week and GAN Integrity.

The “AI Governance Benchmarking Survey” was conducted between October and November and received 232 responses, with 50 percent of respondents working in compliance and risk. The most frequently occuring industry among respondents was financial services (31 percent), with the next closest being energies/utilities and government (each 7 percent), healthcare and education (each 6 percent), and consulting and manufacturing (each 5 percent).

Three-quarters of respondents (176 participants) responded to the question asking whether their organization used AI tools. Within that cohort, 95 percent responded affirmatively—but with less than half (38 percent) having any AI governance in place.

webinar on Tuesday by GAN Integrity and Compliance Week will keep the conversation going by discussing why it is crucial to have AI governance, how organizations can implement AI governance, and what strategies they can use to strengthen their existing AI governance programs. The webinar will feature compliance experts Mary Shirley, chief compliance and privacy officer at ScionHealth; Natasha Allen, partner at Foley & Lardner; Barbara-Ann Boehler, senior director of compliance & ethics at Fordham University School of Law; and Kimberley Allen, chief marketing officer at GAN.
