The Securities and Exchange Commission this week announced that it has appointed Anne Small as general counsel. She will succeed Geoffrey Aronow, who will become a senior counsel to Chairman Mary Jo White.

Small rejoins the SEC from the White House Counsel's Office where she has been serving as Special Assistant to the President and Associate Counsel to the President since October 2011. She has advised on legal policy questions with a focus on economic issues.

Small previously worked at the SEC as deputy general counsel for litigation and adjudication, responsible for oversight of enforcement matters, appellate cases, and adjudications.

Prior to entering the government sector, Small served as partner in the litigation department of law firm WilmerHale, where she focused on commercial and securities litigation, a variety of civil and criminal matters, and trial and appellate work. She began her career as a law clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for Justice Stephen Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court.
