EU regulator questions 'culture of compliance' with Digital Markets Act at Apple, Google

European Commission

The European Commission released its preliminary findings last week regarding Apple and Google not complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). It issued orders to both companies regarding their business practice and plans to release all of its findings next week.

The EC launched its investigation into both Google and Apple last year over concerns of a lack of competitive practices with the company’s respected products and technology as in accordance with the DMA. In its preliminary findings, the EC found that both companies were not in compliance and laid out what would need to be addressed.

“Let me be clear: Our main focus is creating a culture of compliance with the Digital Markets Act,” said Teresa Ribera, the commission’s executive vice president for the Clean, Just and Competitive Transition. “Noncompliance proceedings are reserved for situations where attempts at dialogue have not been successful. But as always, we apply our laws in a fair and nondiscriminatory way, and fully respect parties’ rights of defense.”
