It’s never been just about the rules.
For more than two decades, Compliance Week has covered some of the most crucial aspects of how companies operate, including governance, risk management and, of course, compliance. It’s where the rules dreamed up by lawmakers meet the realities of business. It’s where companies strive to adhere to them, and regulators work to enforce them.
But it’s not that easy. People are imperfect, and so are the laws and regulations we create to prevent bad actors from causing harm while helping those doing good and acting ethically.
At Compliance Week, we’ve written about how corporate cultures of greed and permissiveness led the two of world’s biggest banks to work with convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein. We’ve profiled how a police officer, whose bulletproof vest saved him from a bullet to the heart, went on to uncover fraud at a large body armor manufacturer that put his colleagues in mortal danger. We’ve followed regulatory investigations of money laundering schemes. And we’ve discussed how to tell the difference between responsible environmental programs and greenwashing.
I’m excited to join Compliance Week to help our teams tell the stories that impact companies and industries, as well as people’s lives and livelihoods.
There’s already so much happening in the world today, whether it’s increased regulation from the European Union, stepped up enforcement of antitrust lawsuits in the United States, more money laundering crackdowns in the United Kingdom, or increasing tensions from other governments around the world. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence is promising to upend the way we live, work, and learn. (Join our AI & Compliance Summit in Boston starting Oct. 8, and Compliance Week Europe starting Oct. 15, for more on those topics, by the way.)
In a world of nonstop information, I’m excited to support and contribute to a publication devoted to helping chart a course ahead in this complex and sometimes messy part of life.
Most importantly, I’m grateful to have you as a reader and member of our community. My inbox is always open to you.
Here’s to the journey ahead.
