Daniel Burstein, who most recently served as Executive Deputy Superintendent and Acting Chief of Staff for the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), has joined Guidepost Solutions, a compliance, investigations and risk management firm.

Burstein, a compliance expert who helped oversee a number of NYDFS’ high-profile enforcement actions and regulatory initiatives, will lead the firm’s financial institutions practice as a senior managing director.

Burstein oversaw enforcement actions and directed the day-to-day operations for the NYDFS’ 1,400 employees with a $240 million annual operating budget to supervise 3,800 financial institutions with assets totaling more than $7 trillion. He headed the Real Estate Finance Division and directed several significant matters including major settlements on mortgage servicing and origination violations, and sanctions and anti-money laundering violations.

Prior to joining the DFS, Burstein was an attorney at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where he focused on commercial litigation, criminal defense, and internal investigations.
