The National Security Agency/Central Security Office has named Anne Neuberger to the newly-created position of chief risk officer, effective at the start of October.

Neuberger is special assistant to NSA Director Michael Rogers. She is also the director of the NSA’s Commercial Solutions Center, which has come under a lot of criticism since the fallout from the Edward Snowden leaks about the breadth and depth of U.S. government surveillance activities.

"I've given considerable thought to the way we do business, both in terms of the complexity inherent in carrying out our lawful, authorized mission, and the inherent risks that attach to the activities we undertake," Rogers said in a statement.

Rogers added that it is crucial that the NSA thinks "broadly, rigorously, and systematically about the potential risks involved as it executes its mission pursuant to relevant laws, policies, and priorities, and ensures it renders informed and thoughtful decisions and recommendations to its external stakeholders and overseers," according to an NSA statement.

In her new role, Neuberger will work closely alongside all senior leaders at the agency. In her first year, she will focus on creating and maturing a methodology and processes to assess the various risks across different missions and work toward meeting specific objectives assigned by the director.
