Holding company Navistar International Corp. has appointed Samuel Merksamer to its board of directors. He replaces Diane Gulyas, who retired after serving for three years as a board member. Both changes are effective as of Dec. 10.

Merksamer is a managing director at holding company Icahn Capital, where he has served since 2008, responsible for identifying, analyzing and monitoring investment opportunities and portfolio companies.

Previously, Merksamer served as an analyst for hedge fund management company Airlie Opportunity Capital Management, where he focused on high yield and distressed investments.

Ten members serve on Navistar's board, nine of whom are independent.
