The insider trading trial of Winifred Jiau, a consultant for an expert network who allegedly shared confidential information about public companies with hedge funds, is underway, and Jiau's counsel has apparently wasted no time in playing the "Dog Card." Dealbook reports that in her opening statement yesterday, Joanna C. Hendon, counsel for Jiau, sought to show a "sympathetic side" of her client, and brought up Jiau's golden retriever, Hunter. She "implored the jury to send her client home to her dog."

This is not the first time Hendon has brought up Hunter. Prior to the start of the trial, Hendon stated that “[w]e look forward to defeating this misguided prosecution and sending Ms. Jiau home to California and her beloved dog, Hunter.” For the record, Hunter is currently being watched by friends of Jiau.
