As discussed here, insider trading defendant Winifred Jiau unsuccessfully tried to play the "dog card" at her trial this summer. In her opening statement, Jiau's counsel "implored the jury to send her client home to her dog," Hunter. The jury, however, was not inclined to send Jiau home to Hunter, and convicted Jiau on June 20 of conspiracy and securities fraud.

Today, Jiau was sentenced to four years in prison for her crimes, and was provided with an opportunity to speak before the court. Jiau stated that she wanted to apologize to "my family in the U.S., my six-year-old Golden retriever, Hunter. He flew with me from Taiwan to the U.S. I'm sorry I broke my promise to take care of you and be with you.”

Hunter is reportedly being watched by Jiau's friends while she has been in custody, an arrangement that will now be lengthened by about 28 dog years.
