Banking behemoth The Goldman Sachs Group has appointed Adebayo Ogunlesi as an independent director, effective as of Oct. 15. Ogunlesi also will serve on the firm's audit; risk; compensation; and corporate governance and nominating committees.

Ogunlesi serves as managing partner and chairman at Global Infrastructure Partners, a private equity firm in the energy, transport and water and waste sectors. He held various senior management positions at Credit Suisse Investment Bank from 1983 until 2006, including executive vice chairman and chief client officer, head of global investment banking and a member of the executive board and management committee.

Prior to Credit Suisse, Ogunlesi served as an attorney with law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Earlier in his career, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Thurgood Marshall, associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Ogunlesi's appointment increases the board's size to 11 directors, nine of whom are independent.
