Former Justice Department attorney and federal prosecutor, Jessie Liu, has rejoined Jenner & Block as a partner in its Washington, DC office.

Most recently, Liu served as deputy assistant attorney general in the DoJ’s civil rights division. In that role, she supervised the division’s appellate; employment litigation; and housing and civil enforcement sections; and oversaw the DoJ’s enforcement of a wide variety of anti-discrimination statutes.

Prior to joining the civil rights division, Liu served as deputy chief of staff in the National Security Division and as counsel to the deputy attorney general for national security affairs. In these positions, she advised the assistant attorney general for national security and the deputy attorney general on a wide range of issues, including economic and trade sanctions, export controls, and national security-related civil litigation. In addition, she did significant work related to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, analyzing and advising Department officials on the national security implications of scores of acquisitions of American businesses by foreign companies.

Earlier in her career, as an assistant United States attorney in the District of Columbia, Liu tried dozens of cases and conducted grand jury, pre-trial, sentencing, and post-sentencing proceedings in hundreds of other matters. Prior to becoming a federal prosecutor, Liu was an associate at Jenner & Block.
