Cameron Kerry, former general counsel and acting secretary of the Department of Commerce, will join law firm Sidley Austin as senior counsel in its privacy, data security, and information law practice.

Kerry is currently the Ann R. and Andrew H. Tisch Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Governance Studies and the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings Institution, a private nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions. He is the first to be named to this prominent fellowship designed to bring distinguished leaders together to address challenges facing the country.

Prior to joining the Brookings Institution, Kerry served as general counsel and acting secretary of the Department of Commerce. As Acting Secretary, he was adviser to the President and chief executive of this Cabinet Agency and its 43,000 member global staff.

In his role as General Counsel of Commerce, Kerry was the primary legal adviser to the Secretary of Commerce and oversaw the work of more than 400 lawyers across multiple agencies.
