The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has appointed William Gunn as general counsel, recently confirmed by the Senate. As general counsel, Gunn will represent seven professional staff groups in Washington and 22 regional counsel offices across the United States, offering formal and informal legal and ethical advice and drafting legislation that affects veterans.

Gunn, is a retired Air Force Colonel, who had a private practice in northern Virgina representing military members and veterans. He retired from the Air Force in 2005 as a colonel in the Judge Advocates General's Corps.

Gunn was the first chief defense counsel in the Department of Defense's Office of Military Commissions, a former White House fellow, and a recipient of the ABA's Outstanding Career Military Lawyer Award.
