Report: Human error driving growing number of data breaches

Cyber-security

A larger percentage of cyberattacks last year involved breaches from within organizations compared to previous years, a new industry report indicated.

Verizon’s “2024 Data Breach Investigations Report” expanded its data set with more than 30,000 cybersecurity-related incidents across 94 countries that occurred between Nov. 1, 2022 and Oct. 31, 2023. About 10,000 incidents involved confirmed data breaches that formed the basis for the analysis.

The report found 35 percent of data breaches were caused by internal actors, compared to 20 percent the year before. Most of these internal breaches (73 percent) occurred after someone made an honest mistake.
