American Water Works Company, which supplies drinking water and wastewater to 14 million customers, disclosed a breach of its computer networks and system due to a cybersecurity incident.
The company said upon learning about the breach Thursday it “immediately activated its incident response protocols and third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with containment and mitigation activities and to investigate the nature and scope of the incident,” according to a public filing Monday.
Water Works noted that it promptly notified law enforcement and is fully coordinating with its investigation, along with taking steps to protect its systems and data, including disconnecting or deactivating certain of its systems.
