Pharmacy company CVS Caremark has appointed Thomas Moriarty as general counsel and executive vice president. Moriarty succeeds Douglas Sgarro, who retired in May after over 14 years with the company.

Moriarty will be responsible for CVS' legal department. He also will be a member of the executive committee.

Moriarty most recently served as general counsel at biopharmaceutical company Celgene Corporation, where he was responsible for global legal strategy and served on the company's management committee. Prior to that, he served as general counsel and corporate secretary at Medco Health Solutions.

Earlier in his career, Moriarty served in various positions in the office of the general counsel at biopharmaceutical company Merck & Co. He began his career at law firm Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander & Ferdon.
